Amazon Cloud: Another threat to traditional radio advertising?

Amazon released a new service called Amazon Cloud that offers users the ability to upload photos and music to a remote server and then listen to music over an internet connection. Cloud can take your entire music library and offers users a safe way to backup their music collection, including your iTunes collection. And Cloud is smart enough not to duplicate music that is downloaded. Unlike Pandora which offers streaming audio plus some commercials, Cloud offers commercial free listening.

So what is the threat to traditional radio?  Commercial free listening. Although traditional radio offers variety and new music choices in a genre listeners are interested in, Cloud offers similar features without the disruption of commercials.

In an era where finding the right mediums for advertisers to advertise is more challenging than ever before, Cloud creates another blip in the marketing plan. So should an advertiser continue to advertise on traditional radio? The short answer is yes, depending on the target market they are looking to reach and the type of business they are looking to promote.

There really is no crystal ball when it comes to advertising and finding the right mediums, but cost-benefit, target market and return on investment need to be considered whenever an advertiser is considering an advertising venue. Even with all the threats to music and music listening options, talk radio advertising continues to be a strong venue as there are less threats to talk radio streaming audio.

What’s the Buzz about QR Codes?

A Quick Response Code may just revolutionize your marketing and advertising. According to Wikipedia, a QR code is a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera phones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data.

That’s a lot of blah, blah, blah…but the reality is, a QR code may just change the way people market and advertise their businesses. In this high tech world of smart phones, more and more people – roughly 42% of Americans own a smart phone. This data comes from MobiHealthNews, and the trend is expected to continue to grow.

Because so many people are upgrading to smart phones, the QR code revolution will certainly take over how we market ourselves.

What is a QR Code and how does it work?
A QR code looks like a bar code. But for all intents and purposes the more important thing about this bar code is that when it is scanned by a smartphone app specifically designed to read QR codes, it can bring up your listing on Google places. This listing is rich with information about your business, including all the pertinent information such as your address, phone, and even a working link to your website. You can include information about your business services, your hours of operation, and even list coupons and specials. When someone uploads your QR code, they can get that snapshot of information about your business and more importantly, can link to your website all with the press of a button.

QR Codes are similar to Microsoft tags, but in our opinion, better because of the integration with Google places.

Setting up your QR Code
The process is a bit complex, to set up the code. It involves claiming your Google map, receiving a special postcard from Google, entering the PIN number into an account and generating the code. Once you have your code, you then need to establish the information on your page.  You first need to download the QR code reader app. Then scan it with your phone – you scan it by taking a picture of the code. It’s actually quite simple once you get the hang of it.  When you scan a QR Code, it actually goes to your google places listing.
